Westio UK guide

Responsible gambling at Westio

Gambling should be a paid-for bit of entertainment, never a way to make money or escape problems. This page explains the safer-gambling tools on your Westio account, the UK rules that protect you and where to find free, confidential help.

Gambling as entertainment, not income

Every casino game, including slots, roulette, blackjack and live game shows, is built so that the house has an edge over time. Some sessions will end in profit, but most will not, and no strategy, system or “hot streak” changes that. The safest way to approach Westio, or any other casino, is to treat what you deposit as the cost of a night out: money you can afford to lose without it affecting bills, rent, food or family.

A few principles help keep it that way:

  • Set a budget before you log in, not after you have started playing.
  • Never chase losses. Trying to win back what you have lost is the most common way small losses become big ones.
  • Don’t gamble when you are stressed, low, lonely or have been drinking. Those are the times judgement slips.
  • Never borrow to gamble, and never use money meant for essentials.
  • Take regular breaks and keep track of how long you have been playing.

Warning signs to look out for

Problem gambling rarely happens overnight. It usually creeps up through small changes in behaviour. If any of the following sound familiar, it is worth pausing and taking stock.

Warning signWhat it can look like
Chasing lossesDepositing again straight after a loss to “get it back”
Spending more than plannedRegularly going over your budget or raising deposit limits
Hiding gamblingKeeping play secret from a partner, family or friends
Borrowing moneyUsing credit, loans or money from others to fund gambling
PreoccupationThinking about gambling when you are at work, with family or trying to sleep
Mood changesFeeling anxious, irritable or guilty about gambling, or gambling to escape those feelings
Neglecting other thingsMissing work, sleep, meals or time with people because of play
Needing bigger stakesFeeling you have to bet more to get the same excitement

One sign on its own does not mean you have a problem, but several together, or any that keep coming back, are a strong signal to use the tools below and talk to someone.

Quick self-check

The short quiz below is a self-check based on common problem-gambling screening questions. It is not a diagnosis, and your answers are not stored or shared. Use it as a prompt to reflect honestly on your play, and if the result worries you, contact one of the support services further down this page.

Westio’s safer-gambling tools

All of Westio’s tools sit in one place: log in, open Account, then Safer Gambling. You can also ask Westio’s 24/7 live chat team to apply a time-out or self-exclusion for you. The table summarises what is available.

Westio also offers deposit limits during registration, so you can set them before you ever make a first deposit. Our registration guide shows where that step appears.

Time-out vs self-exclusion

A time-out is for when you want a short, clean break, perhaps after a bad week or around payday. A self-exclusion is for when you feel gambling is becoming harmful and you want to stop. During self-exclusion your Westio account is closed to play, you should not receive marketing, and you cannot reopen it early. If you try to get around it by opening a new account, Westio is required to close it. You can read more about why accounts get restricted in our blocked account guide.

GAMSTOP

GAMSTOP is the free national online self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. Registering at gamstop.co.uk blocks you from every participating UK-licensed gambling website and app, including Westio, for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. It is the most thorough option if you want to stop gambling online, because it does not depend on you excluding from each site one by one.

UK rules that protect you

As a UK-facing operator, Westio has to follow the UK Gambling Commission’s rules. Several of them are there specifically to slow play down and reduce harm.

RuleWhat it means for you
Slot stake limitMaximum £5 per spin, or £2 per spin if you are aged 18–24
No autoplay or turboEvery spin is started by you; no quick-spin or turbo modes
Minimum spin speedAt least 2.5 seconds per slot spin
No losses disguised as winsA return lower than your stake must not be celebrated as a win
No credit cardsDeposits by debit card or other approved methods only
Bonus wagering capBonus wagering requirements capped at 10x
Withdrawals are finalA requested withdrawal cannot be reversed back into play
Age and ID checksVerification before any play, including free demos

Westio may also run affordability checks and ask for documents such as payslips or bank statements if your spending rises. That can feel intrusive, but it exists to stop people gambling beyond their means. Our KYC verification guide explains the documents involved.

How to set your limits, step by step

  1. Work out a monthly entertainment budget. Look at your income after rent, bills, food, travel and savings. Decide what, if anything, is genuinely spare.
  2. Log in to your Westio account and open Account, then Safer Gambling.
  3. Set a monthly deposit limit no higher than that budget. Add a weekly or daily limit too if you tend to play in bursts.
  4. Add a loss limit so a bad run cannot eat your whole budget in one session.
  5. Switch on reality checks at an interval that suits you, such as every 30 minutes.
  6. Save, and check your activity statement monthly to see whether your play matches your plan.

Remember that lowering a limit takes effect straight away, while raising one requires a 24-hour wait. That delay is deliberate: if you still want a higher limit a day later, it is a considered decision rather than an impulse.

Blocking software and bank gambling blocks

Account tools work best alongside blocks that sit outside the casino itself.

  • Gamban and BetBlocker are blocking apps that stop your phone, tablet or computer from opening gambling websites and apps. BetBlocker is free; Gamban is free through some support services and banks.
  • Bank gambling blocks stop your debit card being used for gambling transactions. Monzo, Starling, Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and many other UK banks offer them in their apps, often with a cooling-off period of several days before the block can be removed.
  • GAMSTOP covers online operators, while separate schemes exist for betting shops and land-based venues.

Using two or three of these layers together makes it much harder to act on an urge in the moment. For more on payment methods and how deposits work, see our payments guide.

Help for family and friends

Gambling harm affects partners, children, parents and friends as well as the person gambling. You might notice money going missing, unexplained debts, secrecy around phones or bank statements, or someone becoming withdrawn or short-tempered.

If you are worried about someone:

  • Pick a calm moment to talk, and focus on how their gambling affects you rather than accusing them.
  • Avoid bailing them out of gambling debts, as this can keep the cycle going.
  • Protect your own finances, for example by separating joint accounts.
  • Get support for yourself. GamCare, Gordon Moody and Gamblers Anonymous UK all offer help for affected others, and the National Gambling Helpline is open to anyone worried about someone else’s gambling.

Questions players ask

How do I set a deposit limit on my Westio account?

+

Log in and open Account, then Safer Gambling, and choose a daily, weekly or monthly deposit limit. A lower limit applies immediately, while any increase only takes effect after a 24-hour cooling-off period.

What is the difference between a time-out and self-exclusion at Westio?

+

A time-out is a short break of between 24 hours and 6 weeks. Self-exclusion is a longer block of 6 months to 5 years, intended for people who feel they need to stop gambling altogether, and it cannot be reversed early.

Does GAMSTOP cover Westio?

+

Yes. UK-licensed online operators must honour GAMSTOP, so registering at gamstop.co.uk blocks you from Westio and every other GAMSTOP-participating site for the period you choose, which can be 6 months, 1 year or 5 years.

Who can I talk to if gambling is becoming a problem?

+

Call the National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, free on 0808 8020 133, 24 hours a day. You can also use GamCare's live chat at gamcare.org.uk, or contact BeGambleAware, Gordon Moody or Gamblers Anonymous UK.

What is the maximum slot stake for UK players?

+

Online slot stakes are capped at £5 per spin for UK players, and at £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24. Autoplay, turbo spins and spin speeds faster than 2.5 seconds are also banned.

Can I cancel a withdrawal and play with the money again?

+

No. Under UK rules, once you request a withdrawal it cannot be reversed back into your playing balance. This is a deliberate protection against chasing losses with money you had already decided to take out.
